The Bacardi Cup is an annual sailing event hosted in Biscayne Bay near Miami Beach, FL. The event generally takes place in March.[1] Competitors range from amateur sailors to Olympic professionals and sailing world champions, and range in age from 18 to 85, as of the 2023 season. [2]

History

[edit]

The first event was established in 1927, and was known originally as the Cup of Cuba, before being sponsored by Bacardi from then onward.[3] In 1962, the regatta was hosted in Coconut Grove/Miami at the Coral Reef Yacht Club, where it has continued to sail from every year since.[3] The overthrow of the Cuban government in 1934 led to the suspension of the event for the year. World War II suspended the event from 1943-1947 as well. [3] 1956 was the last time the event had been interrupted, as a result of the Cuban Revolution.
